Leadership Coaching Groups (Next Level Coaching Gruops Pt. 2)

A little over a week ago, I finished the 24 Hr L.E.A.D. team meeting with Paul Johnson, Gary Rohrmayer, Tom Nebel (from the Baptist General Conference) and Dave Smith, Ted Cornelius, and myself (Church Coaching Solutions). It was a very interesting 24 hours.

The acronym, L.E.A.D. stands for LEARN, ENCOURAGE, ACHIEVE, AND DREAM. The Baptist General Conference in the Midwest uses these Group Coaching Meetings to support their pastors and facilitate church planting. The meeting begins with a meal and a "get to know you" time. Then they follow it by an inspirational review of a portion of scripture, application, and prayer time for one another. When that is done there is specific teaching and practice in art of Coaching. Then the leaders head off for a nice meal together and a crazy, fun event for the rest of the evening. The event is participatory and out-of-the-box. Do you like Lazer tag, rock climbing, or go-carts?

They then pick it up the next moring with breakfast and a prayer time. By the morning time, the barriers are down - everyone has shared their hearts (in the coaching time), had fun together, and connected at deeper level. At this point, everyone is ready to review their missional plans (projects) and then dream together about what can be done. At the end of 24 hours, everyone has bonded and created significant plans together.

This is a great way to help leaders come together - encouragement and shared ministry. I will report on some practical examples of these kinds of meetings over the next month or so.

Leadership Coaching Groups (Next Level Coaching Groups)

The emerging "big thing" for church leaders will be "leadership coaching groups."

At Stadia (Independent Christian Churches/Churches of Christ, my church planting group), the Baptist General Conference church planting group (up with Stadia in terms of effectiveness), Purpose Driven Church planting (Ron Sylvia's group) and Vision 360 (new national church planting venture sponsored by an executive from Disney) we are all jumping into it with both feet. At Church Coaching Solutions we developed a powerful model in the Spring of this year - I will share the results of our group coaching for 16 mega-church pastors in a separate post, in a few weeks.

A "leadership coaching group" or "network gathering for leaders" brings high level church leaders together for relationship building, support, and collaborative strategy.

Paul Johnson of Vision 360 has asked my Church Coaching Solution's leadership team (me, Dave Smith, and Ted Cornelius) to meet together with Paul, Gary Rohrmeyer, and Tom Nebel for a 24 hour "LEAD Group Meeting." We start this coming Thursday at noon and run for 24 hours until noon Friday. In the process we believe that God will bond us closer, we will learn from one another (what a group of leaders from which we can learn), and we will come up with a coaching strategy for Vision 360 groups and planters.

I will update everyone next week on some of my top learnings.

Leading Leaders

I just finished a call tonight with a man who had visited our church. Nice guy, seemed to really get a lot out of it. But there was a problem: He wants to be in a group where the pastor knows everyone, and everyone studies togther. He wants a small church.

I like some small churches - especially where the pastor and the people are authentic in the Ways of Jesus and they really try to love one another. The problem is that most small churches are ingrown and self-centered. If we are outreach oriented and service oriented, we will be growing.

In growing churches, we must commit ourselves, as pastor/ministers, to leading leaders. Over the last several months this has become crystal clear to me.

Build a Team of Leaders of Leaders. There are no growth barriers, just leadership barriers. If the senior leader wants to have a big impact upon his community, he must develop a team of “leaders of leaders.” There are three ways in which people follow others:

• There are followers of followers (2 talent people)
• There are leaders of followers (3 talent people)
• There are leaders of leaders (5 talent people)

High impact leaders recruit “leaders of leaders.” In so doing, they expand the reach of the church’s ministry, with every leadership addition, to at least three levels of other people.
